Vigor 2860 Series Product Codes

The Vigor 2860 Series comes in several different models depending on the wireless or VoIP support /features required. Please double check when ordering that you have selected the correct product and a product intended for the correct region/network.

The EAN is a barcode number which identifies the unique specific product type. It is separate to the product serial number which is unique to each product. The EAN will also appear on your product box when you receive it so you can double check that you have been sent the right product.

These product codes are for UK/Irish products only. Please check with your local DrayTek office for the correct part nos. for your region if you are not in the UK/IE to ensure that you get the correct hardware and local support/warranty.

VoIP

Voice-over-IP Features (‘Vn’ Model)

The Vigor 2830Vn provides two analogue phone ports and an analogue line port provide full PSTN and VoIP integration on the same phones, via both the Internet and your regular analogue line. The two phones can be used independently and simultaneously for both incoming and outgoing calls.

As well as the two telephone ports, a third port, the Analogue Line port, connects into your regular analogue line (PSTN/POTS*). This then gives the telephones access to your analogue line to allow you to make calls as well as your VoIP facility (you can select the PSTN line instead of VoIP by dialling #0). Incoming calls are automatically switched through to your telephone(s) (either one or both) so that each phone can be used for both VoIP and POTS calls. Both telephones plugged into your router have access to VoIP and your analogue line. In addition, using the ‘Digit-Map’ facility you can set rules about particular call destinations using either the POTS line or your SIP/VoIP service. For example, local calls can be routed via your PSTN line (if you have a free calls package for example) whereas international calls can go via your preferred VoIP provider; there is flexibility to have several digit-map rules.

As well as connecting with a SIP/VoIP gateway directly (such as DrayTEL), the vigor2830Vn can register its phones as extensions on a remote IP PBX, such as DrayTek’s Vigor IPPBX products, so this is an idea teleworker solution.

*POTS = Plain Old Telephone Service — The traditional analogue phone voice line in your home/office, e.g. B.T. That line may also be carrying your ADSL data signal.

Dial-up Backup

Dial-Up Backup (Analogue)

The Vigor 2820 will detect when your ADSL connection fails and automatically start the dial-up connection using the modem which is connected to the router’s USB port. Once ADSL service is restored, the router will hang-up the dial-up call. Note : The modem is an optional accessory, not included with the router.

There are lots of ‘free’ dial-up ISPs in the UK which you can use in an emergency; you pay only for the call costs (normally 0845 Lo-Call Rate). Alternatively, you can subscribe to an ISP who offers a ‘FRIACO’ service, where your dial-up calls are free of charge, for a monthly subscription.

Analogue Dial-Up on its own

As well as backup to your ASDL connection, you can use dial-up connection permanently without ADSL line. This is ideal for shared Internet access, or wireless access to the Internet in temporary locations where an ADSL line isn’t available, and an alternative to the 3G modem solution also available on the Vigor 2820.

VLAN

802.1q Tagged, Wireless & Port Based VLAN

The Vigor2830 features a hugely flexible VLAN system. In its simplest form, each of the four Gigabit LAN ports can be isolated from each other, for example to feed four different companies or departments but keeping their local traffic completely separated. For more sophisticated scenarios, the Vigor 2830 includes tagged VLANs (802.1q) whereby data is marked with a VLAN identifier. This identifier can be read by an onward Ethernet switch and directed to specific ports or just passed to the LAN for specific VLAN clients to pick up; priorities can also be applied for LAN-side QoS. The VLANs can each be tied into each of the different IP subnets that the router may also be operating, to provide even more isolation. On the Wireless-equipped models (Vigor2830n / 2830Vn) each of the wireless SSIDs can also be grouped within one of the VLANs.

The Vigor2830 also supports up to four private IP subnets on the LAN. Each can be independent (isolated) or common (able to communicate with each other). This is ideal for departmental or multi-occupancy applications.

Overview

Vigor 2830 Series ADSL Router Firewall

This product has now been superseded by the Vigor 2832 series.

The Vigor2830 is our flagship ADSL router/firewall range, winner of the PC Pro wireless router award for three years in a row. This latest series includes support for professional features such as VLAN tagging, Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi (ess models). The Vigor 2830’s secondary WAN interface can be connected to other modems now or later (e.g. a second ADSL, a VDSL/BT Infinity or cable modem etc.). Packed with features, the Vigor 2830 offers truly comprehensive ADSL connectivity and security.

Compatible with all variants of ADSL (including ADSL2+ and Annex M) the Vigor 2830 can also be used for cable-modem and leased line applications using its additional gigabit ethernet WAN port. A four port Gigabit switch on the LAN side provides high speed connectivity for your server or other local PCs, for the highest speed local data transfer. Security features include content filtering, web application controls and new object based firewall management system.

Robust & Comprehensive Firewall

Security is always taken seriously with DrayTek routers. The firewall protects against attacks including DoS (Denial of Service) attacks, IP-based attacks and access by unauthorised remote systems. Wireless, Ethernet and VPN are also protected by various protection systems. The latest (‘Version 3’) DrayTek object-based firewall allows even more setup flexibility than ever, enabling you to create combinations of users, rules and restrictions to suit multi-departmental organisations. The Vigor 2830 now also allows selective direction firewall rules of LAN to WAN, WAN to LAN or LAN to VPN.

IPv6 — Next Generation Internet Routing

The Vigor 2830 now supports IPv6 — the successor to the current IPv4 addressing system that has been used since the Internet was first created. IPv4 address space is full up and IPv6 allows for much more efficient routing and a larger address space. IPv6 is supported both from your own ISP, but if your ISP does not (yet) support IPv6, the Vigor 2850 also supports IPv6 broker/tunnel services to provide IPv6 access using either TSPC or AICCU via 3rd party IPv6 providers. Web Content Filtering

The Content control features of the Vigor 2830 allow you to set restrictions on web site access, blocking download of certain file or data types, blocking specific web sites with whitelists or blacklists, blocking IM/P2P applications or other potentially harmful or wasteful content. Restrictions can be per user, per PC or univeral. Using DrayTek’s GlobalView service, you can block whole categories of web sites (e.g. gambling, adult sites etc.), subject to an annual subscription to the Globalview service, which is continuously updated with new or changed site categorisations or sites which have become compromised (such as infected with Malware). A free 30-day trial is included with your new router.

Triple-WAN Load Balancing & Backup

As well as the primary ADSL (WAN) interface, the Vigor 2830 features two other WAN connections. WAN2 is Ethernet (Gigabit) and WAN3 is a USB port for connection of a 3G/4G USB modem. WAN2 (Ethernet) can connect to a second ADSL modem (e.g. Vigor 120), a cable modem or any other Ethernet-based Internet feed. The multiple WAN interfaces can be used either for WAN-Backup or load balancing.

WAN-Backup provides contingency (redundancy) in case of your primary ADSL line or ISP suffering temporary outage). Internet Traffic will be temporarily routed via the secondary Internet access. When normal services is restored to your primary ADSL line, all traffic is switch back to that.

If you don’t have ADSL, the Ethernet WAN port can instead be used as your primary/only Internet connection (using NAT) so the same router can be used for either ADSL or Ethernet Internet connections.

Vigor 2862 Series VDSL/ADSL Router Firewall

The Vigor 2862 series is our new flagship router/firewall. Exact feature support varies by model (see specification tab). It is what we’ve called the ‘Ultimate DSL router’ supporting both ADSL or VDSL (BT Infinity/FTTC) and packed with professional level features to increase security, flexibility and functionality, making it ideal as your standard router for almost any scenario.

As well as ADSL/VDSL support, alternative WAN ports can instead provide connectivity to Ethernet feeds (Gigabit WAN2 is switchable with LAN Port 5*), secondary xDSL modems or a 3G/4G cellular service using a supported USB adapter (or there is the Vigor 2862Ln model with 3G/4G/LTE built-in). These multiple LAN feeds can be combined for failover or load-balancing.

NAS

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

The Vigor 2830’s USB port can also be used to add storage memory to the unit in the form of a USB memory key (as shown right) or for higher capacity a USB hard drive (normally requires its own power). The Vigor 2830 then provides FTP access file uploading/downloading which can be from the local LAN or from anywhere on the Internet — ideal for a simple to deploy file depository. Access can be ‘public’ or using usernames and passwords, each of which can have their own directories and/or file access rights. As well as FTP, file sharing is available as a Windows ‘network drive’. You can also use Windows Explorer to view and access the contents of the USB drive.

If you do have a USB memory key connected, you can also have the router save it’s system logs (syslog) to that memory instead of to a connecting computer; useful for technical personnel (SysAdmins).

User Mgt.

User Management/Authentication

The Vigor 2830 has built-in user management which allows you to provide internet access to users based on their own unique login (stored in the router, or on an external Radius server). Accounts can be restricted by schedules or maximum usage times but also any other aspect of the firewall or content filtering can be applied on a user-by-user basis. For example, a sales department might not be allowed access to social networking sites except at lunch time, or in a school, teachers and staff have more access permitted than pupils. This works with Wireless (WiFi) clients too so is ideal for guest or temporary access as users can be isolated from the rest of the company LAN.

3G

3G Cellular Data Features

The Vigor 2820 Series’s USB port can host a compatible 3G modem or cellphone for access to the cellular network for full Internet Access. Most UK networks now provide high speed HSDPA data connections at up to 3.6Mb/s download speed. The 3G connection can be used as your primary/only Internet access, or as backup to your main ADSL line connection. This is not only ideal for homes or offices which don’t want to pay fixed line + broadband rental, but also for temporary locations, or those to where fixed lines aren’t available.

With the Wireless LAN equipped models of the Vigor 2820 series, your local users can be connected wirelessly to the router, so instant free ‘hotspots’ can be deployed quickly and easily. Mains power is required for the router’s PSU, but this could be from a mobile generator or equivalent so you need to plan for this.

WiFi

Reliable and High-Performance Wireless LAN (‘n’ and ‘ac’ models only)

The Vigor 2860 Series ‘n’ models feature 802.11n wireless LAN specification and has been certified by the WiFi alliance for cross compatibility and WiFi compliance (including WPA/WPA2 and WMM). The Vigor 2860n and Vn models includes a hardware co-processor for WiFi to ensure best performance and encryption processing.

802.11n provides a total wireless bandwidth of up to 200Mb/s using new methods such as packet aggregation and channel bonding. Real-world throughput depends on your own environment (factors such as obstructions, number of hosts and distance all make a significant difference), but actual transfer speeds of over 100Mb/s are achievable (based on our real world tests). In addition, 802.11n provides greater coverage and resilience to interference compared to previous wireless standards thanks to the MIMO technology and the Vigor’s antennae diversity arrangement.

Dual-band Wireless (Vigor 2860ac model)

The standard Vigor 2860n supports all 2.4Ghz band channels. The Vigor 2860ac additionally supports simultaneous operation of the new 5Ghz band. The 5Ghz band is far less congested so if your PCs or other devices support the 5Ghz band, you can use that. The Vigor 2860ac operate both bands at the same time, so your devices can use either.

Wireless Security

The Vigor 2860 Series wireless models provides several independent levels of security including encryption (up to WPA2), authentication (802.11x) and methods such as MAC address locking and DHCP fixing to restrict access to authorised users only. The Web interface lets you see how many and which clients are currently connected as well as their current bandwidth usage. An ‘instant’ block lets you disconnect a wireless user temporarily in case of query. The Wireless VLAN facility allows you to isolate wireless clients from each other or from the ‘wired’ LAN.

The Vigor 2860 wireless versions also allow guest access with password protection so that visitors can use your WiFi access, but only with a password which you set for them. When the user connects to your wireless LAN, they are firstly presented with your login screen before any Internet access is permitted. This is in addition to any encryption system you have running.

The Multiple SSID features enables you to have up to four distinct or common virtual wireless access points. For example, you could have one for company usage, with access to your company LAN and another for public access which allows internet surfing only. Setting up wireless security is made easier thanks to the WPS feature (WiFi protected setup) whereby your client PC can get it’s security keys by pressing a button on the front of the router.

For specialist or more demanding coverage applications, optional aerials can be used with the Vigor 2860 to potentially increase the range of wireless coverage (depending on environment) or provide directional coverage in order that your wireless transmission is focussed and concentrated into one direction only, for example into a room or across open space. With the increasing popularity of wireless LANs, you will want to choose the least congested wireless channel (Nos. 1-13) for yours so the Vigor can scan and provide a list of all devices in the vicinity so that you can choose the best channel (see screenshot below).

Vigor 2860 ‘n’ models support WDS (Wireless Distribution System) which enables you to use the wireless capability to bridge to another network, within wireless range. You need an additional compatible wireless router for this of course. For further details, see here.

VPN/SSL

VPN — Linking remote offices, HQ, teleworkers and mobile staff

A feature central to DrayTek routers is the VPN (Virtual Private Networking) features. A VPN enables you to link two remote offices, branch offices back to HQ or home-based/mobile teleworkers back to your office. Once connected, they have access to your office/remote resources through a secure encrypted tunnel allowing remote desktop, file sharing and seamless access to other resources and devices.

The Vigor 2860 allows you to set up up to 32 simultaneous VPN tunnels to remote offices or teleworkers. The Vigor 2860 supports all industry standard protocols, including encryption and authentication methods. Teleworkers can authenticate directly with your LDAP server if preferred.

The Vigor 2860 supports VPN trunking; this allows you to create tunnels down muliple WAN connections to a remote site in order to increase bandwidth. VPN trunking also provides failover (backup) of your VPN route down a secondary WAN connection. You can learn more about DrayTek VPN here.

The Vigor 2860 also supports SSL VPN. These are encrypted tunnels linking your teleworker back to your main office but they are ‘clientless in that your O/S does not need to generate the tunnel and you do not need to install any VPN software manually. You instigate an SSL tunnel from your regular web browser, so it could be in a web cafe or guest network, and the tunnel is creating using SSL technology — the same encryption that you use for secure web sites such as your bank. The Vigor 2860 can operate SSL VPNs in either Proxy or full tunnel mode and allows up to 16 simultaneous incoming users. For SSL VPN tunnel mode Windows OS, Mac OS X, Apple iOS and Android are supported.

NAS

VPN — Linking remote offices, HQ, teleworkers and mobile staff

A feature central to DrayTek routers is its VPN (Virtual Private Networking) capabilities. A VPN enables you to link remote offices and branch offices back to HQ, or home-based/mobile teleworkers back to your office. Once connected, they have access to your office/remote resources through a secure encrypted tunnel allowing remote desktop, file sharing and seamless access to other resources and devices.

The Vigor 2862 allows you to have up to 32 simultaneous VPN tunnels to remote offices or teleworkers. It supports all common industry standard protocols, encryption types and authentication methods (see specification tab for full support list). Teleworkers can authenticate directly with your LDAP server if preferred.

The Vigor 2862 supports VPN trunking; this allows you to create tunnels down muliple WAN connections to a remote site in order to increase bandwidth. VPN trunking also provides failover (backup) of your VPN route down a secondary WAN connection. You can learn more about DrayTek VPN here.
